Duomo di Monreale, Monreale

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Monreale
One of the greatest existing examples of Norman architecture in the world, Duomo di Monreale features huge surfaces covered in mosaics. Begun in 1174, this monumental complex eventually grew to include a monastery and a royal palace. Though many of the monastic buildings have been ruined over the centuries, a good part of the monks’ dormitory and the cloister still remain. The outsides of the principal doorways and their pointed arches are enriched with carvings and colored inlay, an unusual combination of Norman-French, Byzantine, and Arab building styles. Although in 1811 a devastating fire destroyed the tombs of both William II, the founder of the cathedral, and his father, the tombs and all of the damaged parts of the complex were fully restored a few years later. • The Cathedral of Monreale is undoubtedly the most beautiful Norman church in all of Sicily. I have not given the full score for the cost of the full visit that I find EXAGGERATED but especially for those who manage: rude, arrogant and as if not enough at 12:45 hunt away because they have to go to lunch! Inadmissible.

  • Impressive Jewel, masterpiece, mix of fantastic Byzantine mosaics. For example, the Mosque of Cordoba is the reason for the majesty and emotions you are trying to experience. Although here is still something different. A must see.

  • One of the best cathedrals I have ever visited in Europe. The architecture; the carved wood and the artistic work on the ceiling and walls are breathtaking. You can easily spend half a day inside the cathedral just admiring the beauty and taking pictures. Once you arrive looking at it from the outside, you never imagine that it is that beautiful on the inside. A must visit once in Palermo.
  • Despite being located in Sicily, this cathedral has SUCH a Byzantine vibe in style of execution. Its 3500 sq m of wondrous mosaics have been built by Greek masters and most are even inscribed in Greek. Add to that a wealth of Islamic influences and you get a complete picture of Sicily during 1200s when this cathedral was built. Together with Chartres', this ranks easily as most beautiful church I've seen so far.
