Camposanto, Pisa

4.4
Some say the beautiful walled cemetery of Camposanto was built around a shipload of holy soil brought from Golgotha in the 12th century. The cemetery’s main feature is a vast rectangular Gothic cloister lined by arches. While most of the cemetery’s frescoes were destroyed in World War II, view the two remaining, as well as detailed sketches of the original works of art. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Pisa holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Camposanto and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Along with the Cathedral was what liked of Pisa (from inside). Just that I do not recommend entering the baptistery, this is most important. Tombstones everywhere, on the floor, on the walls. Frescoes and sculptures. A wonderful arcade.

  • Splendid cloister. The pace given by the white and very thin columns is inspiring. Is an empty space with a spectacular setting. The walls are covered with frescoes more or less preserved. Very nice the "triumph of death" has just been restored. There are also several sculptures and finely carved sarcophagi. Maybe it's the attraction more snubbed the 4 in piazza dei miracoli, which is a shame. Well worth the visit.

  • What a peace do you feel in Camposanto! A respite away from the hustle and bustle next door in the tower of Pisa. The panels are really intriguing, and the game of sunshine with architecture is quite a cool thing.
  • Unusual place. This is a cementary - one of a kind and still in use. Very easy entrance without any queues. There are no crowds inside, it is the calmest of all monuments on Piazza del Duomo in Pisa. Inside you can sit on one of many benches and rest a little, hiding from the sun and heat outside.
