St. Mary's Basilica, Krakow

4.7
Featuring two prominent towers, the red brick St. Mary's Basilica dominates the main square of the city's Old Town. Built in the early 13th century, the church features the largest Gothic altarpiece in the world, carved by German sculptor Veit Stoss. The masterpiece was claimed by the Nazis and moved to Germany during World War II. Recovered and restored after the war, it now sits behind the church's high altar. Admire the bottom of the central panel, which depicts the death of Jesus' mother. On the hour, you can hear the trumpet signal play from the top of the taller tower. • The main tower is one of the symbols of the city. Inside we opted for the prayer area, without a ticket, on the guidance of the guide who had advised us of work in progress. From this area you have a very brief view of the interior so for those who are a real enthusiast better take the tkt. On the other hand, it is not an as unique in the world, so for a "normal" visitor the area of prayer is also very good. In absolute silence and respect of course

  • This is such a stunning basilica located right at the center of Old Town Square in Krakow. The two signature towers are impressive and the inside of the basilica is carefully ornate and rich in colors and art. The altar is currently undergoing renovations as of April 2019 but the rest of the basilica was simply stunning. There is a fee to get in but you can see some of it for free if you enter through the main door, however, I think paying for the ticket is worth to see the complete spectacle that this church is. One of the most beautiful churches I have seen in Europe!
  • One of my favourites basilicas. The ceiling have a blue color that is fascinating. Looking at the ceiling is almost like looking at a clear blue night sky. The altar and Jesus in the cross is also magnificent. It is a must.
