World Heritage-listed Edinburgh combines ancient and modern in a uniquely Scottish atmosphere.
Step out of the city life by going to Arthur's Seat and Calton Hill. Your inner history buff will appreciate Melrose Abbey and Edinburgh Castle. Step out of Edinburgh to go to Roslin and see Rosslyn Chapel, which is approximately 30 minutes away. There's lots more to do: step into the grandiose world of Holyrood Park, appreciate the history behind Scottish National War Memorial, take in the architecture and atmosphere at St Giles' Cathedral, and examine the collection at Royal Yacht Britannia.

On the 19th (Wed), take in the spiritual surroundings of Saint Magnus Cathedral, contemplate the long history of Bishop & Earls Palace, pause for some serene contemplation at Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, then steep yourself in history at Standing Stones of Stenness, then contemplate the long history of Ring of Brodgar, and finally explore the ancient world of Skara Brae. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: get engrossed in the history at Tomb of the Eagles, sample the fine beverages at Highland Park Distillery, then get engrossed in the history at The Orkney Museum, and finally steep yourself in history at Maeshowe.

You can fly from Edinburgh to Kirkwall in 3.5 hours. Other options are to do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of train and bus. Traveling from Edinburgh in June, you will find days in Kirkwall are a bit cooler (16°C), and nights are about the same (9°C). Finish up your sightseeing early on the 20th (Thu) so you can travel to Aviemore.

Start off your visit on the 21st (Fri): see the interesting displays at Highland Folk Museum, look for all kinds of wild species at RZSS Highland Wildlife Park, then look for all kinds of wild species at Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, and finally explore the ancient world of Ruthven Barracks. Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants – and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Get outdoors at Glen Etive and Steall Waterfall. Explore hidden gems such as Highland Titles Nature Reserve and Ben Nevis. Explore Fort William's surroundings by going to Glenfinnan Viaduct (in Glenfinnan) and Oban (Oban Distillery & McCaig's Tower).
