A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Visit Clock Tower (Tokei-dai) and Hokkaido University Former Sapporo Agricultural School and Library for their historical value. Step out of the city life by going to Earth Dream Kakuyama Farm and Mt. Okura Observatory. There's still lots to do: take some stellar pictures from Mt. Moiwa, ponder the world of politics at Former Hokkaido Government Office Building, indulge in Japan's hot spring tradition at some of the top local onsens, and walk around Odori Park.

Sydney, Australia to Sapporo is an approximately 15-hour flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 1 hour traveling from Sydney to Sapporo. When traveling from Sydney in April, plan for cooler days and a bit cooler nights in Sapporo: temperatures range from 9°C by day to 7°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 16th (Tue) early enough to catch the train to Asahikawa.

Onna-son

Located on the coast in the middle of the island, Onna-son has become known for its beaches and seaside economy.
Start off your visit on the 19th (Fri): see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour and then step into the grandiose world of Shurijo Castle. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: tour the pleasant surroundings at Cape Manzamo, then kick back and relax at Diamond Beach, then explore the activities along Shiokawa, and finally kick back and relax at Akabaka Beach.

Getting from Asahikawa to Onna-son by flight takes about 8.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of car and ferry. Traveling from Asahikawa in April, things will get much warmer in Onna-son: highs are around 28°C and lows about 20°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 20th (Sat) so you can travel to Hatsukaichi.

Do some cultural sightseeing at Gion and Kinkaku-ji. Nijo Castle and Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine will appeal to history buffs.
